Wow this post has been kind of a long time coming. This summer has been a bit of a whirlwind and has, admittedly, not really gone as planned. But you know what they say about plans any way; If you want to make God laugh, tell him what you’ve got planned. The Universe threw us a bit of a curveball at the end of June and as you can see from the title…we’re moving!
You’re moving?!
Now, before we get ahead of ourselves, let me clarify that this isn’t one of those “Bye Bye NYC, I’ll love you forever” kinds of posts. We aren’t leaving NYC this year, though admittedly it was on the table. I realize that might shock some of you but for now I’ll save that discussion for another post. Let me know if you’d be interested to hear about our NYC/future life plans in the comments.
So no, we aren’t moving out of the city quite yet, but we are moving into a brand new apartment! We’ve lived in Brooklyn since we moved to the city back in September 2015, and have really stayed in the same neighborhood that entire time. Our new apartment is further south in Brooklyn, down by Prospect Park. If you aren’t familiar with NYC/Brooklyn, Prospect Park is to Brooklyn what Central Park is to Manhattan—a huge oasis that offers acres and acres of fields to picnic in, trails to walk, run or bike on, ponds to sit and read by, and so much more. Some of my other Prospect Park favorites include Smorgasburg (a truly awesome, weekly food festival) and the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens where we shoot with the Cherry Blossoms every spring!
Even though we choose to live in the biggest city in the country, Craig and I actually love to get out in nature and enjoy a little time away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Especially amid this pandemic (that still isn’t over by the way!), we’ve really been enjoying spending more time in local parks around Brooklyn and of course, Prospect Park is the best of the best. We’re really excited to live so close to it in our new place.
But you love your current apartment?!
Yes, we love our current place so, so much. Honestly, I thought we’d be in this apartment for at least another year. It’s pretty perfect, and checked all of our boxes. But again, life has a way of throwing curveballs when you least expect it and it seems the Universe had other plans for us.
Long story short, our current place is in a condo building that was built two years ago. We were among the first to move in and secure one of the few apartments they’d designated as rental units while they sold most of the others. Well, this summer when we reached out to renew our lease for another year, they informed us that they were no longer renewing leases and are selling our apartment (and a few others in the building).
This news was really devastating.
Like I said, we love our place and truly feel at home here. But when life hands you lemons, you’ve gotta try to make lemonade. So we picked up the pieces, had A LOT of discussions about where we wanted to live next and if we should even stay in NYC, and ultimately decided to start our apartment search in new areas of Brooklyn to see what we could find.
Enter, our new apartment…
While I’m still super sad to leave our current place, I am also very excited to start anew in the apartment we found! We officially signed our new lease over this past weekend and we move in next Thursday!
The new apartment is also in a brand new building, so we’ll be the first to live in our exact apartment, which I really prefer honestly. It gets a lot of natural light; has a separate washer & dryer (our current place has an all-in-one unit) which makes doing multiple loads of laundry easier; larger and more closets (this is huge!); and a microwave! That sounds so silly but our current place didn’t come with a microwave and with limited counter space, we just decided to go without one for the past two years. Let’s just say, it’s been cute but I’m READY to have a microwave again haha.
The building also has an attended lobby (like someone who sits at the front desk and manages the building) which we’ve never had before; a full gym and yoga room; a gorgeous, landscaped roof deck; a co-working space, lounge, and game room; and a home theater room! I’ve never had so many amenities, so I’m really excited for those as well.
Looking ahead…
So with all of that being said, I hope you understand now why I’ve been kind of MIA this summer. It’s been a lot to handle and juggle and figure out, and truly, your girl is tired. Now that we can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel, with our move date rapidly approaching next week, I’m feeling better about everything.
In the spirit of transparency, I still have my days where I’m sad and overwhelmed by the thought of having to really move out of this apartment that we love. But other days, like today, I feel excited and hopeful. Excited for this new chapter for Craig and I. Excited to explore this new neighborhood of ours, and excited to be just blocks away from my best friend. Excited to experience all of the new memories we’ll create in this new space. And excited to see where life takes us from here.
I actually went on a Youtube binge last night, watching all the NYC Apartment Tour videos I could find for decor inspiration. We have some really exciting ideas that we want to implement in the new apartment that I can’t wait to put together and share with you all, so I hope you’re excited for some home content! If so, be sure to follow me over on Instagram where the updates will happen more frequently; subscribe to my Youtube channel where I’ll be sharing an empty apartment tour and more as we decorate the space; and finally subscribe to my newsletter here on the blog, so you don’t miss a post.
I love you all, and cheers to this new chapter.
