Last year I wrote this post all about getting what you want. To this day, I still stand by those tips and it’s one of my favorite posts to date so if you haven’t already read it, I highly recommend pausing here, reading that post, and coming back. Today I figured I’d update that list with my biggest tip from 2019, and something that has proven to be true time and time again. It’s a pretty simple concept, and one that we’ve all heard before but I think we forget about it and write it off as “too cliché”…
Ask and you shall receive.
That’s it. Ask and you shall receive. You guys, I cannot stress this idea enough. In this post I shared that my word for the year is going to be flourish. I didn’t write down any specific goals or anything like that, I just felt like I wanted to leave things open-ended and flourish in all aspects of life this year.
In order to do that, I realized that I need to start asking more for what I want. Whether that meant asking people for favors that would help me out in real life; or pitching my blog to more brands for collaborations; or even just asking for my daily coffee to have two pumps of sugar-free vanilla instead of three at Starbucks; I needed to start actively asking for the things that I wanted in order to receive more of them. My mom always told me that if you never ask, you’ll never know. And if you do ask, the worst thing they can say is no. As a kid, I didn’t really embrace her advice but now that I’m in my twenties, I can confidently say it has made all the difference.
I shared all about how I moved to NYC straight out of college and what drew me to the city in this post (from way back when), and something I said in the last paragraph of it still rings true today.
I’m a firm believer that you have to make things happen in this world;
you can’t wait around and hope that they do on their own.
This statement is so intrinsic to who I am as a person and who I want to become. A huge part of making things happen for yourself and going for your dreams, is asking for what you want! If you don’t ask, how will people or the universe be able to help you? Ask for what you want and be open to receiving it. That’s my biggest advice for this year when it comes to getting what you want. Don’t be afraid to go out there and work for your goals, and don’t be afraid to ask for things as well.

I asked for a raise in 2017 and I got it. I asked for a different job title during a job negotiation last year, and I got it. I asked for a super awesome blog collaboration coming up this spring (that I knew was a shot in the dark) and I GOT IT. These examples are not to brag. They’re just a few real life examples that I have experienced firsthand, to inspire all of you reading this right now to go out and ask for what you want, because this is real and it works and it can work for you too.
Ask and you shall receive, my friends. Do that and I promise you’ll start getting more of what you really want.
