With only eight days left until Christmas (seriously, HOW is that possible?) I’ve been ramping up my Christmas movie game so that I can fit in all of my favorites. Admittedly, it’s been pretty difficult between working full-time in the office, making weekend plans with friends before we all go our separate ways to be with family, and just the sheer amount of movies there are to watch! I mean Hallmark and Lifetime are both playing movies 24/7 this month, along with Freeform playing its usual 25 Days ‘Til Christmas countdown…it barely leaves any room for the classics that aren’t necessarily on TV. That being said, I always make sure to carve out time every year to watch my tried and true favorites. These are the movies that always get me in the Christmas spirit (as if I needed any help with that lol.) These are my five favorite Christmas movies (at the moment because who can really choose when there are so many good ones?)
Love Actually
Love Actually has been a favorite of mine for years now…dare I say over a decade?! My mom actually showed me this movie back in middle school and we still love dancing around and singing along during the big concert performance of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” at the end of the movie. It’s such a fun movie, packed with London’s finest actors and actresses living their own Christmas love stories at the same time. They’re all linked in small ways and it’s just such a feel good movie without being super cheesy or predictable.
How The Grinch Stole Christmas
Okay maybe this is cheating but I’m going to say this includes both the original cartoon version and the live action movie with Jim Carrey. I just love both versions so much and the original Grinch movie has been one of my favorite Christmas movies since I was a kid. I love the classic by Dr. Seuss but also really enjoy the embellishments and extra story elements that they added later in the live action version. Also the jokes in the Jim Carrey movie are still funny and I laugh out loud watching it to this day.
The Polar Express
Fun fact: when I was little (like, elementary school age) I would borrow my school library’s copy of The Polar Express book all December long and read it over and over again. I was enamored by the idea of this magical train that could take children to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. So when the movie came out years later, I was immediately obsessed and let me just say, it did not disappoint. The Polar Express is one of those Christmas movies that exudes the meaning of Christmas and the joy of the season. I will 100% watch this with my kids one day and read them the original book. It just holds such a special place in my heart.
Home Alone 2: Lost In New York
This might be a controversial pick since I know a lot of people love the original, but I’ve just always preferred the second one. It takes place in NYC during Christmastime—what more could you want? I’ll never forget the scene where Kevin McCallister (a young Macaulay Culkin) is sitting in the back of a stretch limo, watching the original Grinch movie, and snacking on a piping hot New York style cheese pizza on his way to the largest toy store in the city. I mean, talk about #goals.
This Christmas
Last but certainly not least, we have my final favorite Christmas movie: This Christmas. Man, do I love this movie. This came out back when I was in middle school or maybe the very beginning of high school and quickly became one of my favorite Christmas movies. Though I no longer support Chris Brown (lol) I do love his character and songs in the movie, and I really enjoy watching so many strong black characters play such a perfectly imperfect family.
There you have it! My top five favorite Christmas movies. I keep wanting to add “for now” or “at the moment” to that phrase but I think after looking at this list, these are my definitive favorites. The season just isn’t complete until I watch all of these movies at least once, and it’s been that way for years now so I guess these really are my tried and true favorites! What’s your favorite Christmas movie? I’d love to hear since I can never get enough this time of year. Let me know in the comments below, on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook!
