Ahh, my long-awaited Mexico trip recap is finally here! Sorry for the delay on this. Truthfully, I had 1,001 photos to go through on my phone in order to put together this post and that task just felt super daunting, so I decided to procrastinate ? sorry! But as promised, this week I’m talking all about my girls trip to Mexico a couple of weeks ago. This post got really long, really quickly, so today’s post will be all about where we stayed, where we ate, and what we did; and part two of this post (which will be up on Wednesday!) will be what I wore/packed! Like I said, this is a long one friends; so go grab your coffee, your matcha latte, your wine, whatever, and get settled! Let’s just jump right into it, shall we?
Where We Stayed
So this was more than just a girl’s trip; it was actually for one of my best friend’s (and sorority sister’s) bachelorette party! We surprised her with a trip to Riviera Maya, Mexico and stayed at an all-inclusive resort called Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort. It’s about an hour drive from the Cancun airport, and since it’s an all-inclusive, the hotel included a shuttle for us to and from the airport. The resort itself is MASSIVE, you guys. We were there for a long weekend (Friday – Monday morning) and only saw maybe half of it? Lol.
We stayed in the club premium junior suites, which allowed us access to the VIP areas all weekend, and we mostly explored those areas during our stay. The resort was absolutely amazing, and aside from the spacious and gorgeous rooms, we also had private beach access, an onsite spa, multiple pools, multiple restaurants, and the resort even had it’s own lazy river! What more can you want?
I also feel like I should mention that I felt incredibly safe throughout our entire stay. As someone who was leaving the country for the first time EVER, I was a little bit nervous going on this trip. I had no idea what to expect, and was pleasantly surprised by how easy everything was and how secluded and safe the resort felt. It’s kind of like it’s only little slice of paradise. Highly recommend if you’re considering a trip to Mexico soon!
Where We Ate
So here’s where things get a little interesting, hah! Since it was an all-inclusive resort, everything was paid for; and I mean everything. All of our drinks, meals and snacks were included which was awesome! We ended up eating our breakfasts and lunches at the VIP lounge, which had a hot and cold buffet, as well as a menu that you could order from at the table. We also ate dinner one night at one of the other buffets on the resort. What I will say is that neither of these places really blew us away unfortunately. The food was pretty standard and did not meet expectations. I went to Mexico with this vision of bottomless guac and the best tacos I’ll ever eat; and the one quesadilla that I did get with a side of guac, was subpar at best. First world problems, obviously, but want to be totally honest over here, ha!
However, the onsite restaurants were actually really good. On our first night we went to the steakhouse, which was cool because they had the full dinner menu that you order from as well as a salad, sides, and dessert bar. So once we placed our orders with our server, we were able to get up and serve ourselves salad and light appetizers from the buffet. This dinner was also a lot of fun because our servers got really into celebrating our Bride-To-Be, and pretty much showered us with complimentary tequila shots ? it was a bit much, but when in Mexico right?
On our final night in Mexico we went to the Japanese hibachi restaurant at the resort and I absolutely loved this place. Honestly it was just like going to a hibachi restaurant in the US, but I’m not complaining since those are some of my favorite restaurants to go to, ha! For dessert I got the fried ice cream, which I was really excited about because a) ice cream, and b) I’ve always wanted to try fried ice cream but never actually did it before. Let me just say, it did not disappoint! Very tasty and definitely something I will be getting again now that I’ve tried it.
What We Did
Now that I’ve broken down where we stayed and ate, we can get to the fun stuff— what we did! I’ll try to keep this concise and not go into a minute-by-minute breakdown for you guys, ha! So day one (Friday), we all arrived in Mexico and took the shuttle to our resort. Once we got there and checked into our rooms, we sent the bride into one of the other guests’ room (there were 9 of us so we had 3 rooms total), and a few of us transformed her room into a bachelorette suite. We brought balloons, blow up letters, some NSFW photos (lol), fairy lights and the party favors to really deck out the room. Pro-tip: get all of this stuff (including a hand pump for the balloons!) on amazon/etsy before your trip so you aren’t running around when you get to your destination!
Once it was all set up we all got dressed for dinner and went over to one of the aforementioned buffets. After dinner we had a little bachelorette party in the decorated room, complete with bachelorette party games, plenty of drinks and lots of girl talk! It was so fun and a great kick off to the weekend.
On day two (Saturday), we had a Hydro-Spa appointment which was actually INCREDIBLE. If you know me, you know that I love all things water-related and am pretty much a mermaid trapped in a human body so this was totally up my alley. For those who don’t know (which I certainly didn’t before this trip), a Hydro-Spa is basically a bunch of different pools with different jet stations. For example one corner would have jets that massaged your back/shoulders; another area for your lower back; another for your feet, etc. There were even these cool recliners built into part of the pool that had jets built in all around them so it was like a full body massage in the water! There were also different jacuzzis and an ice bath; as well as steam rooms, saunas and different kinds of showers. Basically, it was a really cool experience and I highly recommend. After the spa, we grabbed lunch at the VIP lounge and then went our separate ways for a bit to nap or explore before dinner at the steakhouse that night.
On our final day in Mexico (Sunday), we had a pretty packed day. First thing in the morning, we did a bike tour around the resort which, to all of our surprise, was much more intense than we imagined it would be, ha! It was like a full blown workout and since we rode through a “jungle” area (for lack of a better word) we got bitten relentlessly by bugs! So that was an interesting start to the day, but some redeeming parts of the bike tour were that we saw a cenote, got a tour of a Mexican botanical garden and learned a ton about their culture, and got to sit by this pond with those little fish that nibble at/clean your feet…Ok that doesn’t sound pleasant at all but you know what I’m talking about, right? If not, this just got super awkward, lol.
After the bike tour we were all completely exhausted (and sweaty!), so we went back to our rooms to change and then decided to head over to the lazy river for a bit of relaxation. We brought piña coladas down to the lazy river and had a great time drifting in our floats. After that we grabbed some lunch at one of the outdoor spots and then headed to one of the pools over by our building. After tons of photos and boomerangs (did it even happen if you don’t get instagram pics?) and hanging out at the pool, we went back to our rooms and showered and changed for dinner that night at the hibachi restaurant. After dinner we went back to our main bachelorette room and hung out for a while to wrap up the trip.
Woo! I told you this was a long one, ha! I had such a great time on this trip and have the world’s biggest travel bug now. I hope I covered everything and don’t forget to come back on Wednesday for all of my outfit details and what I packed for this trip!
