Today’s post is a bit different but we’re just going to go with it. It’s November, the second to last month of the year and the beginning of the holiday season. November signals the end of autumn and the beginning of winter; it’s a month of gratitude, traditions, and love; and to me, it’s a month that often gets overshadowed by the month coming in hot right behind it (looking at you, December). But this November, I want to be more intentional about what I do and spend my time on; who I spend time with and being more present in those moments especially. So today I want to share the three things that we all MUST do this month, before we get caught up in the chaos of the holidays, or blink and the month is gone.
V-O-T-E
You didn’t see this coming? Really? It IS Election Day, after all. Today we vote in the midterm elections around the country and it has never been more important to exercise your right to vote. I know a lot of people may feel like midterms aren’t as important as the presidential elections, but these are almost more important if you ask me. These are the people that directly represent US. The People. These are the people that make up the House, the Senate and Congress. The ones that vote on all the issues we hear about year after year, and often times don’t agree with. This is it. If you were angry about the results of the 2016 election; horrified by the rise of hate and racism and bigotry in our country as of late; upset about the violence in used-to-be-safe spaces like schools, churches, synagogues, movie theaters, and so many more; disgusted by the blatant disrespect for people different than us…then VOTE. Let your voice be heard. I’ll end this rant here or we’ll be here all day and you may miss your chance to go vote, but seriously, just do it, okay?
Spend Time With Loved Ones
Another potentially obvious one, but hear me out. Thanksgiving is in just a few weeks and there is no better time to spend time with your family and friends and let them know how much they mean to you. It sounds cliché but think about all the years that you weren’t fully present during Thanksgiving dinner, or didn’t really sit down and enjoy that time with your family and friends; some that you don’t even get to see very often. Put the phone or the iPad away for a few hours and really take the time to experience the holidays with the people that you love. Life is so unpredictable, and you never really know if someone at the table this year will still be there the next. And if you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, consider doing a Friendsgiving this year! Or just grabbing a meal with some good friends. The point is just to spend time with the people who matter to you, and to let them know it. There’s no time like the present.
Treat Yourself
The last thing that you need to do this month is to remember to treat yourself. This can be done a million different ways. Whether it’s splurging on that must-have purse during Black Friday sales or finally booking that vacation you’ve been wanting to go on; carving time out from your busy schedule to relax in a hot bubble bath on a Sunday evening; reading a good book every night before bed. Whatever it is that will be a treat for yourself, do it. You deserve a little something, after all we’re about to wrap up another year! And please try not to get caught up in all the picture-perfect holiday traditions you see on social media. Remember that they’re not always as they seem and find joy in the things that are real in your own life. Take time for yourself. Show yourself grace. And remember that self-care is so important, all year long.
I hope you guys enjoyed this post. I know it was a little bit different, but I’d love to hear your thoughts and if you have anything that you want to add to this list, feel free to comment below or share with me over on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook!
